How 6

How 6

Most people who try to learn a second language never get past the first few weeks. The reason isn't a lack of talent or a missing app. It's that the way most learners practice stops the moment the novelty fades. Six small habits, used together, are what separate the people who reach real conversation from the ones who stall at "Hola, me llamo..."

First, treat the first eight weeks as ear training, not vocabulary memorization. Your brain learns a new sound system by listening to it in long stretches, not by grinding flashcards for ten minutes a day. Aim for thirty minutes of audio immersion while you commute, cook, or walk, and resist the urge to look up every unknown word. Context does the lifting.

Second, schedule speaking from day one, even if you only know ten words. Speaking is a motor skill, and waiting until you "feel ready" is the same trap that keeps most adult learners silent. Book a fifteen-minute conversation with a tutor twice a week, or use an AI speaking partner if scheduling is hard. The point is to put your mouth on the sounds early.

Third, use spaced repetition for vocabulary, but only for the words you actually met in real listening or reading. Curating a personal deck of 1,500 words you pulled from context beats a 10,000-word pre-made list every time. Review for ten minutes a morning, then close the app.

Fourth, write a short journal entry every night, even if it's two sentences. Pick three things that happened that day and describe them in your target language, looking up only what you can't infer. After ninety days you have a visible record of progress that doubles as reading practice.

Fifth, measure by minutes practiced, not by streak counts. Streaks reward showing up; minutes practiced reward effort. Log the actual time, and let the consistency flow from that.

Want a built-in place to practice the speaking habit? The Lingua-Lab app pairs you with an AI tutor for the fifteen-minute conversations that make everything else stick, and you can start a free trial today.
